Greta Gerwig Reacts to Jo Koy’s “Barbie” Diss
Greta Gerwig has taken the high road by not letting comedian Jo Koy’s Golden Globes remarks about “Barbie” get to her.
During the opening monologue of the awards ceremony, which took place last Sunday, 7 January at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, host Koy jokingly compared two multi-award-nominated flicks: “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie”.
“‘Oppenheimer’ is based on the 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project, and ‘Barbie’ is about a plastic doll with big boobies,” he jibed.
While Koy received flak from disgusted fans for his remark, Gerwig – who directed “Barbie”, which took home a Golden Globe for cinematic and box office achievement – shared her thoughts with BBC Radio on Wednesday, 10 January.
“Well, he’s not wrong,” the 40-year-old stated matter-of-factly. “She’s the first doll that was mass-produced with breasts, so he was right on.
“Barbie, by her very construction, has no character, no story; she’s there to be projected upon.”
She added, while also possibly aiming a small jab at Koy and other killjoys: “The insight that [Barbie creator] Ruth Handler had when she was watching her daughter play with baby dolls, is she realised, ‘My daughter doesn’t want to pretend to be a mother. She wants to pretend to be a grown woman.’”
